A box of 10 Wa-rosoku (hand-rolled candles), renowned for their steady burning and even flame. Made of rice bran wax, a hard wax extracted from the otherwise wasted husk and germ of rice. The wicks are made of washi paper, rolled around a rush skewer, and the body is built up by rotating this in the right hand whilst the hot wax is smoothed about the shaft with the left — a rarely practiced traditional art known as kiro-tegake-seiho — before the top is shaped and the rush removed leaving a hollow core. These candles are dipped in natural dyes, making them eye-catching and fun. Each one lasts around 15 minutes, recommended for use during a rest break or meditation.

Handcrafted by artisans in the Shiga prefecture in Japan.

About the makers:

Daiyo was established in the Takashima county of Shiga Prefecture in 1914. Artisanship has been passed down across four generations, polished and refined as time passes. Shiga prefecture is home to Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, and an abundance of natural resources.

Consequently, Shiga has accumulated a wealth of knowledge on the coexistence of man and nature. Daiyo’s Japanese candles are 100% made from natural plant wax. Our principles of making candles from the blessings of nature have remained unchanged since our establishment more than a century ago.
